$15.00 per person / 10.00 before Oct 31 / 5.00 for festival performers.
Village Dance from Mali, West Africa. Born in Mali, West Africa, Yaya
is a member of the Minianka (Bamana) people. He was raised in a culture
that works, worships, lives and breathes to the beat of the drum. An instrument
for transmitting traditional knowledge among the Minianka, the drum is
the focal point of Yaya's life story, and his link through the universal
medium of music with the western world. Yaya speaks Bambara, Senufo, French
and English.
Yaya’s classes are more informative than purely “entertaining”.
He illuminates the traditional meanings versus performance element in
his teaching, relaying to dancers what parts of body are used for what
they hear in the drum, and using the whole body as vehicle of expression
