ARGA NOVA DANCE and the South Dallas Cultural Center will present the fifth annual South Dallas Dance Festival, Impromptu!”, on 11 and 12 November 2005. Events will include two performances and a Master Class with Nem Brito from Bahia, Brazil.

The Master Class will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 12 November, at SouthFair [SouthFair CDC Against the Odds 1 on 1 Mentoring Program], 3127 MLK, Jr. Blvd., Dallas 75215 / inside the gated strip].
Admission is $15.00, ($10.00 if paid before 30 October!)
Mr. Brito is a former choreographer, principal dancer and Associate Artistic Director of Dance Brazil in New York. He is the founder and director of the Diaspora Art Center in Brazil. For more information on Mr. Brito, pleas see below.

The performances will be at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 11 and 12 November. They will be held at James Madison High School, 3000 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Dallas TX 75215.
Suggested contribution of $10.00 will be asked.
Performances will feature: the SDDF 2005 Scholarship Recipient, Beckles Dancing Company, Kumaasi African Ensemble, Second Generation Dance Company from Houston … and others

A reception will follow the Saturday performance.

SOUTH DALLAS DANCE FESTIVAL was founded to strengthen exchange within the dance community and the community at large; to enlighten artists and public about the riches that exist locally, nationally and internationally; and to celebrate with pride what the area has to offer through Dance.

Nem Brito (born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil) is the director and founder of Diaspora Art Center in the heart of Salvador’s Historic District. Mr. Brito was the choreographer, principal dancer and Associate Artistic Director for “Dance Brazil” in New York, from 1985 to 1995. He has been a student in residency at several dance schools in New York, notably, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Merce Cunningham School and Broadway Dance Center. Nem has performed with “Dance Brazil” in theaters throughout the US, Europe and in Hong Kong.
Mr. Brito was the first male dancer to perform in Bahia’s world famous Carnival as the “King of Ilê Aiyê,” the foremost cultural group for Brazilians of African descent. At present, Mr. Brito is the principal instructor in dance for pre-adolescents and teenagers at the Diaspora Art Center. He also has developed an on-going international Afro-Brazilian dance class for adults.
Mr. Brito has studied and practiced the Candomblé religion for more than ten years since his initiation. Over those years, he has learned many of the traditional Orixá dances from his mother, a Candomblé High priestess and these he incorporates into a rich cultural and aesthetic experience.
